Change is a process, not an event! – 11 years of active work

Celebrating a birthday in the presence of the closest associates, partners, supporters and friends.

It started over a decade ago when the needs for a civic initiative in the Roma community for education and assistance were imposed, and according to the requirements and circumstances, activities in the field of free legal aid were developed, court procedures and legislative initiatives started and health care services were enabled, as basic pillars of the work of the association. In this way, developing individual and collective capacities, from an ethnically profiled local group of activists, through the years ROMA S.O.S. has grown into an organization representing interests of all citizens of the Republic of Macedonia.

Protection of copyright in the practice of ROMA S.O.S.

Copyright Infringement refers to intellectual theft or plagiarism that involves the downloading of material, publication, text, paragraph, conclusions or recommendations from documents, publications, web pages, works, etc. produced by an individual or a company, available to the public, without specifying the source or the author.

Experience shows that in Macedonia it is significantly present, but not enough actualized, prevented or sanctioned. On several occasions, the materials and announcements that originated from our project activities were subject to plagiarism, but in one case the same was verified by the JUDGMENT of the Basic Court Prilep dated 26.11.2018, after the submission of a proposal for issuing a penal order by the PPO Prilep, by which one entity and two individuals were found guilty according to Art. 157 from the Criminal Code and sentenced to a total fine of 130,750 MKD plus a criminal lump sum of 2,000 MKD.

The verdict under the number K-504/18 is published on the website of the Court Portal of the Republic of Macedonia (www.vsrm.mk).

“We are all the voice of the community” – a campaign to overcome the negative rumors

Stereotypes include fixed, immutable, and generalized features for members of particular groups. Rumors are an effective means of communicating stereotypes. Stereotypes and rumors lower the status and position of these groups in society and reduce the space for coexistence and positive interaction.

In the period May 2017 – October 2018, with the support of the OSCE Mission to Skopje, a campaign against the most common rumors for different target groups (victims of rumors) in Macedonia was conducted. The campaign aimed to sow doubt and cause thinking about the diversity of the general population, and to engage people at the level of emotions and feelings. It was not only aimed at rumors that were prevalent, but was intended to cause changes in the sources of stereotypes and rumors.

“Child marriage is not a Roma issue; it is a harmful practice, it is a lifetime inequality and it is a form of disempowerment of girls but also of boys!” says Nesime Salioska at a global event

Training cycle “Public appearance and speaking”

In the period August-September 2018, two two-day trainings for Roma women were held on the theme Public appearance and speaking. The purpose of these trainings was to strengthen the women for their inclusion in the “Roma Civic Parliament” and thus overcome the fear of public appearance. The need for such an activity stems from the impression that women have no self-confidence to express their opinion to the public and that men are the ones who should speak or represent the interests of the community. Hence, these trainings were gender-focused and conceptualized in a way that would show women they have something to say and their voice is important. The trainings were held by two long-time associates of the organization and experienced journalists, Elizabeta Filiposka and Gordana Cvetanoska, both associates in Radio Pela.

Small victories bring big changes!

There are no forbidden topics, there is only a wish to learn.

The narrative literally refers to the image that we have in our heads for a particular situation or group of people, which almost always determines our beliefs, attitudes and behaviors towards them. This picture may be mistakenly set for certain reasons (stacking of stereotypes and prejudices) and affect the quality of interaction.

The change of the narrative aims to cause positive behavior, better communication and understanding, ie, overcoming the emotional and cognitive obstacles. This change must be subtle and non-invasive, most often through narrative methods and creation of positive examples.

The generational circle of silence is interrupted for the students of the “military school” in Prilep

In the 2017/18 school year, a total of 174 students in 8 classes, 6 in the third grade and 2 in the fourth grade, enrolled in the “Dobre Jovanoski” Primary School in Prilep, attended classes in a facility 300 meters away from the school itself, or the so-called “Military school” named as Training Center “Lazo Filipovski Lavski”. And while the parents have reacted to the teaching, safety and hygienic conditions in these premises for the past 15 years, there is no record that can illustrate the situation in this dispersed school.
