Association ROMA S.O.S. awarded with \

At the solemn meeting of the Council of the Municipality of Prilep, held on the occasion of the Day of the Liberation of Prilep, plaquette “November 3rd” was awarded to the association ROMA S.O.S. for education of the citizens of Roma nationality in the Municipality of Prilep.

Everyone can fight for their right, as long as they do not endanger exercising of the rights of others!” – it was the key message in the daily education of the Roma population over the past year, though which the association alluded to the needs of collectivity rather than of the individual. In parallel, leadership has been promoted as a team work from which all involved parties enjoy prosperity and achieve a common result.

Thus, the most visible achievements of 2017 are the following:

  • Realized campaign, research and wide consultation on the issue of Children’s Marriage in 6 municipalities with Roma communities, associations, health, educational and social workers, MoI, Ombudsman, competent ministries, public prosecutor’s offices, MPs, UN agencies, etc.
  • Proposed amendments to the Criminal Code, the Family Law, the Law on Secondary Education and the Law on Primary Education, to the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy, the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Education in order to provide protection from child marriages.
  • Realized research and identified key problems of Trizla 2 in the area of housing and public promotion, ie advocacy of recommendations for improving the situation through organized 2 public events in Prilep.
  • Established and coordinated 2 informal groups of 40 Roma – human rights spokespersons, named as “Roma Civic Parliament”, in Prilep and Bitola.
  • Mediation with health institutions for using free health services by 90 Roma, focusing on women’s reproductive health, immunization and systematic examinations of children, patronage visits of pregnant and women in puerperium, prevention of malignant diseases, and so on.
  • 10 educational workshops were held by the Center for Public Health, the Department of Gynecology and the Health Center for education of the Roma population and their inclusion in the Preventive and curative programs of the Ministry of Health.
  • Unconditional support in this process was given by the Foundation Open Society Macedonia, the National Democratic Institute, Habitat Macedonia, the UNICEF Office in Skopje and many other collaborators and supporters, both locally and nationally, on which the association on this occasion expresses appreciation.

Happy November 3rd to all the citizens of Prilep and successful work of the Mayor and the Council of the Municipality of Prilep, in the future efforts to reduce the gap between the Roma and non-Roma population in order to create a better picture and situation for all citizens and the city!
